Michael Lau x MiXTRA Shoe Shop (Sample)

Last Saturday saw the opening of Michael Lau’s latest exhibition in Hong Kong, ‘MiXTRA Shoe Shop (Sample)’ in Tsim Sha Tsui’s newest shopping destination, the K-11 Art Mall. Debuted in 2005, Mr. Shoe was first shown at the (now closed down)  SIXS Gallary in Causeway Bay, and ended up touring the world by staging exhibitions at the dpmhi Store in London, LOGOS Gallary in Shibuya in Japan, and the Nike 706 Space in Beijing.

In past exhibitions, Michael would present every individual Mr. Shoe character inside a glass case for viewing, but for this event he presented the characters in a group as if they were a pair of shoes sitting on the rack at a vintage sneaker shop. People would view the characters behind the shop window, which recreates the feeling where as a kid, you would press your nose up against the shop window just to get a clearer view of that pair of Air Jordan’s you want to buy….

Every Mr. Shoe characters has a different colourway of which some of them we are not likely to see on anyone’s feet in real life, such as the homage to Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Hermes. Other notable colourways include: HTM, Safari (an original conceptt by SBTG, later adopted into an inline product by Nike), ACG Wildwood (Michael’s first collaboration with Nike and Fiberops), iPod (his latest design for this exhibition), Damien Hirst (he dissected a Mr. Shoe figure just like Damien’s artwork), Neighborhood, A Bathing Ape (AF1 with a Bapesta-esque Swoosh), Michaelrishi (a custom, hand painted AF1 made by Michael for family and friends) and a mini ‘Crazy AF1′ he did for Nike’s ‘1LOVE’ AF1 Program last year.

Inside the gallery is a wall which is filled up with the original draft and sketches to the Mr. Shoe comic book that is drawn by Michael. On the other side is a counter where you could purchase a mini Mr. Shoe figure, special t-shirt sets, tote bag sets and other merchandises which was produced in limited numbers and specifically designed for this event.

And while you are at K-11 Art Mall, why not join in the ‘Mr. Shoe Hunt’ where if you can discover the location of 11 different Mr. Shoe figures that is secretly hidden away within the mall, you could walk away with a free Mr. Shoe coffee mug. Also do not forget to take a picture with that big, pink 12 foot Mr. Shoe figure just located opposite of the concierge in the mall.

The exhibitions runs from now till the 1st of August.
