PANOPT ICONS : Urban Evolution

Posted by Ray Shion On October - 27 - 2010

panoptICONS Utrecht 2010 from Helden on Vimeo.

“The surveillance camera seems to have become a real pest that feeds on our privacy. To represent this, camera birds – city birds with cameras instead of heads – were placed throughout the city centre of Utrecht where they feed on our presence. In addition, a camera bird in captivity was displayed to show the feeding process and to make the everyday breach of our privacy more personal and tangible.”

PANOPT ICONS is a project by Thomas voor ‘t Hekke and Bas van Oerle that raise awareness of the constant monitoring we are being put under in major cities by CCTV. Like birds that populated our space, we have often become immune and even unaware of their presence and accepted the intrusion in the name of security.

Indica – A Way Away

Posted by Dalsix Höðr Visser On October - 24 - 2010

Without a doubt, the Scandinavian nation of Finland can be summed up in just one word: Mystical. From the lush natural surroundings to the music produced from the likes of HIM, Enochian Crescent and Tarot just to name a few, there is an intriguing element that cannot be found elsewhere and along comes the 5 piece female romantic pop group Indica with their unique brand of ethereal sounds that soothe the heart. Do not let the ‘pop’ label deter you, there is a reason as to why they were marked for stardom by the man who spotted them (Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish) and metal label Nuclear Blast signing the band with the album A Way Away not only marking their debut on a new record company, it is their first English language album with their previous discographies being in Suomi (the language spoken in Finland)

But does Indica have what it takes to prove their mettle and live up to their aspirations? The proof they say, is in the pudding and if you were to place A Way Away next to a symphonic metal band, it would give some of the bands belonging to the latter category a good run for its money. Led by the charismatic and distinctive lead vocalist Jonsu, A Way Away combines sweeping symphonic complements, haunting melodies that will creep into your soul with solace and quaint lyrics that will have you singing along as you enjoy the blissful sounds of Indica. Despite the fact that a quarter of their songs in the album are English remakes of their old material (In Passing, Scissor Paper Rock, Islands Of Light and Straight And Arrow), it is been enhanced and bolstered with a strong orchestra to vindicate the importance of their earlier work. Yet the other tracks from A Way Away are not to be forgotten and the lead single Precious Dark is a fitting track to catch the attention of first time listeners while Lilja’s Lament is simply spectacular as Jonsu showcases her powerful vocal range and within seconds, it will leave you spellbound as moves seamlessly like an audio storytelling session told with the aid of soothing music from the rest of the band. Needless to say, the long awaited arrival of Indica into the global map is finally over as Finland’s best kept secret has finally planted their melodic flag to the ground from the signs of it, the fiesty five piece are here to stay

Choice tracks: Lilja’s Lament, In Passing, Precious Dark

Murderdolls – Women And Children Last

Posted by Dalsix Höðr Visser On October - 24 - 2010

What became of music in the absence of the Murderdolls as Joey Jordison returned to Slipknot and Wednesday 13 kicked off his solo career along with a couple of side projects (Bourbon Crow & Gunfire 76) to keep him occupied? Simply put, a dour scene deprived of an energetic band which thrives on horror, metal and like Victor Frankenstein, creating a monster that has become legendary and you do not need a Ghoulscout to tell you that: Songs like Dead In Hollywood and their remake of Billy Idol’s White Wedding have become classics which only led to one question: Where will they go from here?

For the death valley superstars, it meant a long sabbatical before resurfacing from the grave and giving metal a pleasant surprise sex in the form of Women And Children Last. While it has primarily been seen as a side project for both Wednesday and Joey over the years, the new record proves to be anything but that as the duo progresses from the definitive Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls album and with 15 tracks of ammunition to blast through your listening pleasure, Murderdolls definitely means business and they make no bones about it. With the likes of Mick Mars (Mötley Crue) contributing licks for Drug Me To Hell and the first single My Dark Place Alone orchestrating the first attack to commemorate their return, Women And Children Last is filled with horror metal mayhem that combines aggression, tongue in cheek horror references and most importantly, not deviating away from the Murderdolls formula that has made them stand out from their peers. Moreover, the new album has allowed the band to come up with a fresh batch of authentic material instead of rehashing old Frankenstein Drag Queens songs (Wednesday 13′s previous band and the predecessor to Murderdolls). The result? Catchy songs such as Summertime Suicide, the quasi hair metal feel of Nowhere and a nod to Frankenstein Drag Queens in the bonus track Motherf***er See, Motherf***er Do but most importantly, an album that gets your attention from start to end like a death defying rollercoaster ride. So lock up your women and hide the kids, the Murderdolls are back in business and this time, there will be blood.

Choice Tracks: Summertime Suicide, Nowhere, Chapel Of Blood

Carpio Boots

Posted by admin On October - 10 - 2010
