X: Mark of Collaboration

For the first time Arkitip handed the curating responsibilities for the issue edition to an outside source; namely, Alex Calderwood and John C Jay. Both of them had join forces to create an edition of Arkitip born from a provocative dialogue between unique individuals from their own personal network of creatives.

This special issue of Arkitip celebrates the power of collaboration with the empowerment of technology, culture’s admiration and the opportunity to exchange ideas across time zones, lifestyles and disciplines. It shown that the art of collaboration has been renewed by a new generation raised on digital media and global connections.

Retrospective : The Era of the Boombox aka Ghetto Blaster

Posted by Ray Shion On December - 11 - 2009

How many of us had grown up in the era of the Boombox and how many of us still own one ?

Introduced commercially in the late 1970′s, Boomboxes ( also known as Ghetto Blaster ) are associated with 1980s phenomena such as breakdancing and hip hop culture.  Portable, Loud, Bassy and often Flashy in design, it’s the essential arsenal of it’s generation as compare to our iPod genetation.

npr:music had run an article titled A Eulogy For the Boombox by Frannie Kelley taking a rewind to look at the Boomboxes era and how it had defined a part of American’s music history.

Back in the day, you could take your music with you and play it loud, even if people didn’t want to hear it. 150 decibels of power-packed bass blasted out on street corners from New York City to Topeka. Starting in the mid-’70s, boomboxes were available everywhere, and they weren’t too expensive. Young inner-city kids lugged them around, and kids in the suburbs kept them in their cars.”
